Maytag recalls dishwashers 160,000


A fire hazard prompts the manufacturer Maytag (WHR) to recall some 160,000 dishwashers were sold in Canada. Moreover, American society is asking owners to stop using them until they are repaired.

Maytag said Thursday that an electrical malfunction in the heating element of the dishwasher can pose a serious risk of fire. Maytag has received 12 reports of failure of the heating element machines that have caused the fire appliances. The kitchen has even suffered extensive damage by fire.

However, no injuries have been reported.

The recall includes dishwashers with plastic tanks trademarks Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Maytag Performa by Crosley.

Dishwashers affected were manufactured with front panels black, bisque, white, silver and stainless steel.

The machines were purchased in department stores and appliance stores and by homebuilders nationwide. They were distributed from February 2006 to April 2010 inclusive, at prices ranging from $ 250 to $ 900.

If the dishwasher is included in the recall, consumers can make arrangements for free repairs at home or receive a rebate of $ 150 or $ 250 following the purchase of some new dishwashers from Maytag brand with stainless steel tank.

Maytag and CSA International announce a voluntary recall of dishwashers posing a fire hazard

TORONTO, Feb. 1 / CNW / - In cooperation with CSA International, Maytag Corp.., Newton, Iowa, is voluntarily recalling about 201,540 dishwashers MaytagMD brand and Jenn-AirMD sold in Canada department stores, shops for appliances and home centers. The models, ranging in price from $ 399 to $ 999 CA, were sold from July 1997 to June 2001. Dishwashers affected by the recall were manufactured in the United States. In some cases, the rinse aid can leak from its dispenser and come into contact with the internal wiring of the dishwasher, which can short-circuit and ignite, posing a fire hazard. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled products unless otherwise instructed.

Maytag has received a report on an incident in Canada.

Manufacturer: Maytag Corp. of Newton, Iowa or Maytag Corp. of Benton Harbor, Mich.

Hazard: An electrical failure in the dishwasher's heating element can pose a serious fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Maytag has received 12 reports of dishwasher heating element failures that resulted in fires and dishwasher damage, including one report of extensive kitchen damage from a fire. No injuries have been reported.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled dishwashers, disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it, inform all users of the dishwasher about the risk of fire and contact Maytag to verify if their dishwasher is included in the recall. If the dishwasher is included in the recall, consumers can either schedule a free in-home repair or receive a rebate following the purchase of certain new Maytag brand stainless-steel tub dishwashers. The rebate is $150 if the consumer purchases new dishwasher model MDB7609, or $250 if the consumer purchases new dishwasher models MDB8959 or MDB7809. Consumers should not return the recalled dishwashers to the retailer where purchased as retailers are not prepared to take the units back.
